Is the petrification painful - like a body being consumed by a disease; numbing, like fighting the urge for sleep; scary like a night terror or anxiety attack; desperate as one tries to avoid it; a peaceful clerical (cleanse the mind) end; or wearing out patience and benevolence through boredom? (or some combination?)

...could also be a stationary structure observing the wayward people through the centuries until they all flow together and seem the same...

...though, supposedly, Angels can't change personality, if I recall. And it's an oddity for them to breathe...maybe explain how they don't change?
