To be honest I've never actually seen a guy do that, though it's apparently a good way to shock the entire patronage of a cowboy bar. And no, that was not from personal experience.

I do for some classes. Others I have a laptop for notes, and scroll through tumblr.

I usually record my lectures so I can listen to them at a later time again. This way I can just pay attention to the professor. P:
