Well I asked about the setting, and all I got to go off of was grimdark Final Fantasy so don't look at me! :P

Lawtan 11-19-2015 08:38 PM

Roger that *Looks for Batman* xD

CupcakeDolly 11-19-2015 10:47 PM

Nobody said if they wanted magic or not! ^^;;

I'm pretty much just tailoring the setting to what people do with their characters at this point.
Just so everyone's clear though, I've decided that magic is a thing that exists outside of the city, in that great vast world that the poor schlubs in the slums won't ever get to see. The gentry keeps a tight lid on the existence of witches and warlocks, to discourage the discovery of any innate magical abilities in their citizens.

As far as the monsters outside of the city, uhm... I pretty much just had Final Fantasy in mind for that too! But if you've got any ideas for beasties, Law, you're more than welcome to bring them into the story!

Lawtan 11-20-2015 12:05 AM

Roger that! *salutes*

(Reason why I was asking was that magic tends to have certain logic. I was wondering what powered the magic, and had the idea that certain monsters were hunted for magical ingredients - eyes of the Basilisk, dragon's blood, and all. Would add an extra layer of exploitation, and encourage the disappearance of normal slum-folk)

>.> I have yet to play Final Fantasy, so I lack knowledge of how it works.

Imagine if you will a dark and twisted forest, where the creatures themselves are tainted and reworked by the creeping dark that lingers behind every shadow. It presses ever inward, intent on shutting out the last few glimmering lights that shine within the walls of Atticus. It presses in against the walls, searching for any way in. Nameless horrors lurk within the night, all too easily imagined but never seen by anyone who might survive them. Winged, fanged, beasts of liquid flesh. But the creeping dark also finds it way in to the hearts and minds of men. Those who journey and travel outside the walls may be the unwary carrier of the darkness, helping it manifest itself within the fragile confines of the city. It waits for however long it must, pooling and coalescing from the minds of many until it may become the incarnation that it so chooses.

To continue to live in the city of Atticus is to eventually die to the darkness and to be buried in fire, for bones laid to rest in the earth are claimed and used as well. Every conceivable thing at its disposal is well used in its never ending assault on humanity.

Or, wizards or some shit. I dunno.

Suzerain of Sheol 11-20-2015 02:11 AM

So does that mean I can actually summon Yog-Sothoth? :|

Salone 11-20-2015 02:40 AM

1000gp worth of crushed diamonds, 40cc's of blood from a mouse, and candle tallow made from the fat of a troll should do the trick.

Suzerain of Sheol 11-20-2015 03:15 AM

So, when do we start!?

Pretty much just imagine walking outside of the city and having this happen.

I was waiting to get more people to play before we started. But I guess we have people now! Soooo... We can start whenever?

Lawtan 11-20-2015 11:29 AM

I am curious, as I understood it to be Steampunk (and the main Magic-Steampunk worlds I know are TERA (The Exiled Realms of Arborea) and Hopeless Maine (more Lovecraftian Victorian era, centered around an orphanage on an island with ghosts and the slowly growing storms...main character's father went mad and got himself killed studying the magical squid-things)

So, having a Water Panther...
Or a Cavern of hydra-lizards...
Or reactive (flammable) glowing substances that fall from the trees...
etc.

Suzerain of Sheol 11-20-2015 03:16 PM

Oh why did you have to remind me of my angsty love-hate relationship with FF13? :P

CupcakeDolly 11-20-2015 06:36 PM

Law, it was pointed out to me that the description of Atticus was a lot like Dishonored, so that's mostly the kind of steampunk I was going for. The airships and gigantic beasts that ambush you as soon as you step outside were the Final Fantasy elements. Anything else is up for discussion, or you can just throw it into the story and see how it works. The only thing that's established for certain is the way that things work inside the city. We can all just work as a group to fill in the blanks for the rest of the world.
I haven't heard of the things you're talking about, but I'm looking them up at this moment!!

I guess 'magic' would also be the 'darkness' outside the city that the people are afraid of?
Or was Salone just quoting something? What even was that?

FF13 was good! ...ish.

Lawtan 11-20-2015 07:33 PM

Oh! I can send you the stories if you want.
Oh, Dishonored is interesting! That is a context that helps :)

Bullshit. It was all bullshit. Like, half the things that come out of my mouth are lies.
